Meet Our Field Biologists: Lia Domico

Lia Domico
Hometown: Westville, New Jersey
Degrees: B.S. in Environmental Science, Drexel University

Have you ever wondered what daily life is like for a sea turtle biologist? We invite you to meet our sea turtle biologists!

We are so grateful for the many sandy miles our biologists walked at all hours of the night during the 2015-2016 nesting season. Together, we’re creating a future for sea turtles.

Learn about more opportunities to get involved.

What attracted you to this field position?

I was attracted to this field position because I was interested in doing sea turtle research in grad school. I had previously done in-water sea turtle research and I thought it would be a great opportunity to get a different kind of field experience with nesting turtles.

What’s the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is that I get to live on one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever been to. I grew up around water and I have always had a passion for the ocean so living on Playa Grande is amazing.

What do you do in your free time in Costa Rica?

In my free time I love to surf. The station is the perfect place because it’s only a short walk to check out the waves.

How is Costa Rica different than your home country?

Costa Rica is different than the United States because everything is much more relaxed here (in a good way). Everyone is very happy and life is much more stress free.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

If I could have a superpower it would be to be able to breathe underwater so that I could dive and spearfish with no problem!

If you were a sea turtle, what kind would you be and why?

If I were a sea turtle I would be a leatherback because I would love to see the depths of the ocean at 1000+m with my own eyes!

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

My favorite ice cream flavor is green mint chocolate chip.

Describe Costa Rica in three words.

Pura vida mae.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

People would be surprised to learn that I love to fish and hunt.
