Meet Our Field Biologists: Collin Hertz

Collin Hertz
Hometown: Venice, CA, USA
Degree: B.S. Biology, Cornell University

Have you ever wondered what daily life is like for a sea turtle biologist? We invite you to meet our sea turtle biologists!

We are so grateful for the many sandy miles our biologists walked at all hours of the night during the 2015-2016 nesting season. Together, we’re creating a future for sea turtles.

Learn about more opportunities to get involved.

What attracted you to this field position?

I was attracted to this field position by the study organism, the leatherback sea turtle! I always wanted to work with dinosaurs as a kid, and leatherbacks are as close as it gets. Living beachfront in Costa Rica didn’t hurt either.

What’s the best part of your job?

The best part about this job is interacting with the Earthwatch volunteers. I love hearing how people from all walks of life are interested in biology and conservation.

What do you do in your free time in Costa Rica?

Take naps, play video games, and exercise.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

Teleportation.

If you were a sea turtle, what kind would you be and why?

An olive ridley. They have the best dance moves and are the cutest.

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Mint chip, on most days.

Describe Costa Rica in three words.

Chill, remote, tropical.
