Janet Avery

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Janet Avery on September 9, 2020 in Cherry Hill NJ. Janet led a wondrously full and exemplary life of 96 years as family matriarch, scientist, artist, humanitarian, and supporter of women, biology, conservation, and the arts. She loved her many life-long friends and neighbors from Pearl River NY and area, and friends from UU Church in Pomona NY. She treasured her trips to Monhegan Island, and Costa Rica. She was a great friend of leatherback turtles and giant pandas and great supporter of The Leatherback Trust and Global Cause Foundation. Janet died at home with Hal and Sue Avery after a long and happy life. It was not from Covid but was from a combination of factors that accumulate with old age.

Some of her happiest memories were of being on the beach at Playa Grande with the turtles. She was always excited to see the leatherbacks and the young people who studied and protected them. She enjoyed talking to the research assistants at the Goldring-Gund Marine Biology Station. Ever the adventurer she accompanied us on hikes over the rough trail at Rincon de la Vieja where Janet trooped along with her walking stick over roots and rocks for the whole many hours of the trail. She was a real fighter! Janet made many donations to the Leatherback Trust  and her generosity allowed us to acquire some of the first lots along the beach near the station. She is already missed.
