In Memoriam – Barbara Bell

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Barbara Allen Bell on January 13, 2025, at the age of 52. Barbara was a sea turtle scientist and conservationist who made important discoveries about the development of leatherback turtle and freshwater turtle eggs. She was also an artist, singer, gardener, and advocate for the disabled. She was a great friend of the turtles and The Leatherback Trust. She played an important role in the establishment of Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas in Costa Rica.

Barbara earned her BS in biology from the College of William and Mary and her MS and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Science at Drexel University with Dr. Jim Spotila. For her master’s degree, she discovered that the low reproductive success of leatherback turtles was due to high mortality of the eggs, not low fertility as previously thought. It had long been thought that leatherback turtle mothers laid many infertile eggs since when nests on the beach were excavated after hatchlings emerged there were many eggs without visible embryos. Barbara did a clever series of experiments in which she incubated half of a clutch of eggs in a laboratory incubator and half in its original nest. She discovered that fertility of eggs for 17 females averaged 93.3% and that embryos that died did so mainly early in incubation so that by the time of hatching no embryo could be seen in eggs remaining in the nest. This changed the way that biologists looked at the process of egg development in leatherbacks.

For her Ph.D. Barbara discovered that there was a high incidence of deformities in snapping turtle and painted turtle eggs at the John Heinz Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia associated with long term background pollution in the refuge. An oil spill in 2000 contaminated the refuge and in that year embryonic death and the incidence of deformities in turtles contaminated with oil was higher than in other years. Her results demonstrated the need to clean up legacy pollution in wildlife refuges and to prevent new pollution if those refuges are to continue as protected areas for turtles.

Until chronic illness sidelined Barbara, she continued to be active as a scientist. She played a key role in the 2001 International Sea Turtle Symposium in Philadelphia when the International Sea Turtle Society was founded and authored papers on freshwater and sea turtles.

An accomplished artist, Barbara designed the logo for the 21st International Sea Turtle Symposium and provided illustrations and drawings for “The Leatherback Turtle, Biology and Conservation” in 2015.

Barbara struggled with poor health for many years, but she maintained a positive attitude and helped many in the chronic illness community. Barbara cared about how we interact with the world and each other. She said “I don’t think people should try to hurt other people. I think we should be taking better care of the planet than we are.” She made the world a better place for turtles and for people. No one can have a better legacy.

Her time with us was all too brief, but we are better off for the time she was able to share with us. She is already missed.

We mourn the loss of our dear friend Robin Scott a fearless and dynamic woman who was a conservationist, educator, business leader and savior of diamondback terrapins. Robin long worked to save diamondback terrapins in the back bays around Margate City New Jersey. She was a strong supporter of The Leatherback Trust and a partner in our conservation efforts in New Jersey. Robin was the owner of Ray Scott’s Dock, a small marina in Margate, New Jersey, where she was known as “The Turtle Lady.” Robin became concerned when she saw terrapins walking up a boat ramp into her property looking for someplace to lay eggs. She let the females lay their eggs in some soft ground and a few months later out came the hatchlings. Since they were small, and it was late in the season Robin put the hatchlings into one of her minnow tanks and fed them all winter. She looked up information on how to take care of turtles and put in basking platforms and grow lights. By spring the hatchlings had grown considerably and in late summer she released them into the marsh. Soon word got out and children started to bring in hatchlings from their yards and others they found on the street or had rescued from the local cat. Robin contacted Dr. Walter Bien, a professor at Drexel University and local terrapin expert. She obtained a rehabilitation permit from New Jersey DNR with Dr. Bien and became a real turtle advocate.

Local children came by to watch their baby turtles grow all summer in Robin’s tanks. It became a real educational experience for both the children and their parents. She also hosted an interactive educational exhibit at her marina, Wetlands Wonderland, during the annual Margate Funfest. We organized the live exhibits of turtles, fish and other ocean creatures to the joy of thousands of children and adults.

Robin made another very important positive contribution to saving terrapins. She decided to do something about the large numbers of terrapins being killed on the Margate Bridge Causeway on the way from the mainland. She convinced city fathers and the private Margate Bridge Company to fence the road. Boy scouts and civic organizations came out one Saturday in spring 2008 and fenced about half the road with materials provided by the city. The first year about half of the causeway was completed and in 2009 most of the rest of the road. In 2008 only a few terrapins became victims of the predatory cars and in 2009 there were none. The causeway is still fenced, and terrapins are still safe

Robin was a dynamic businesswoman who owned and operated Ray Scott’s Dock for 27 years. She was lovingly referred to as the “mom to all” by the scores of young people she worked with over the years. She was the embodiment of a community leader who also enjoyed being the “turtle mom” to multitudes of diamondback terrapins she rescued and raised. She was a fierce advocate for all back bay marine wildlife and defended them tirelessly. The most notable part of Robin’s life was her character- her infectious enthusiasm, grit, big heart, her faith in God, and the overflow of love she poured into everyone she met. She was joy personified, adored by all. Robin remains a model for those who wonder how they can save sea turtles when they don’t have an advanced degree or don’t live on a turtle beach. She saved the turtles where she lived. Everyone can do that, and the world will be a better place if we all do so.

God gives each of us enough time to make the world a better place. Robin, you have used your time well!

Jim Spotila

We mourn the loss of Dr. Mario Boza a founding member of the Board of The Leatherback Trust. He died on October 29, 2021, after a several months long battle with cancer. Mario Boza was a giant in the world of conservation, a scientist, an author, a teacher, a husband, a father, a gentleman, and a true patriot of Costa Rica.

Don Mario was a student when he went to the United States on a conservation field trip. He saw the wonders of the US National Parks, especially the Great Smoky Mountains, and returned to Costa Rica determined to save the forests, flora and fauna of Costa Rica for future generations. In 1970 he founded the National Parks of Costa Rica with Alvaro Ugalde and became the first Director of the National Parks System. With the help of US Peace Corps volunteers, he built the first few parks and established the basis for the continued expansion of the park system. From 1990 to 1994 he was Vice Minister of the Environment and established Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas in Guanacaste by Executive Decree. In 1995 that park became permanent in law. In 2001 he joined us in forming The Leatherback Trust to protect the park and to save leatherback and other sea turtles.

A guiding light for conservation in Costa Rica Don Mario was always busy writing books, teaching, advising Ministers and Presidents, writing new legislation, supporting the park guards, and defending the national parks. He was the recipient of many international and national awards including the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Prize in 1983 and honorary doctorates from Drexel University and Purdue University in the 1990s. His latest award was an “Award of Special Recognition and Friendship” from his friends and colleagues at The Leatherback Trust.

Throughout his life Don Mario was never too busy or proud to take time to talk to the “regular people”, the Kike’s and Dona Esperanza’s of Costa Rica, the park guards who seemed to idolize him when he came to Volcan Arenal, and the students and children whom he spoke to when they came on a field trip. Most amazing was that every year from 2005 to 2020 he took several days from his busy schedule to ride the bus with 50+ sixth graders from Bullis Charter School in California to see Costa Rica’s national parks and learn about conservation and ecology.

Don Mario had a brilliant mind and a big heart, a loving family and many, many friends. He made the world a better place and we miss him dearly. Two messages from members of our Board say it best:

“My family and I saw Mario most often in the company of his wife, Marta, and the sixth graders of Bullis Charter school. He was always engaged, had a wonderful sense of humor, and was defined by his loyalty, his humanity, his dedication. A giant on the Costa Rican national stage, he happily returned year after year to carefully answer questions on Costa Rican ecology and sea turtles posed by young California students. We will miss him immeasurably. He endures in the forests and beaches of his country, in his writings, in the many children he quietly inspired.

Vaya con Dios Don Mario”

Mason Hersey

“The pain that overwhelms us for his departure is very deep. We as Costa Ricans value Don Mario as a brave man, consistent with his struggles for nature and protected areas. Without a doubt, Costa Rica (and the world) benefited from a very special person, concerned with defending the most precious thing we have: the planet we live on and its resources. Our pain for the departure of Don Mario is very deep, but we know that he fulfilled his mission on the planet, beyond what is expected of each one. Rest in peace our dear Don Mario, we will miss him deeply. A hug to all.”

Eduardo Carrillo

My wife and fellow Board member, Maggie Kruesi, and I last saw Don Mario when he walked away down the street in La Fortuna to catch a bus back to San Jose after leading the children from Bullis School to see the national parks in February 2020, just before the pandemic. He had to get home to work on some legislation, but he would not take a ride in a special car, he rode with the people.

No one can replace Don Mario, but many of us working together can try to continue his work to save the turtles and the national parks. It is the least that we can do.

I miss my dear friend Don Mario more than I can express. He taught me so much and inspired me to keep fighting for the turtles and the planet. God has called him home because his work was done. My tears cloud my eyes, my lips tremble, but my heart keeps beating and I will carry on his fight as long as I am able.

Thank you Don Mario!!

Jim Spotila

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Janet Avery on September 9, 2020 in Cherry Hill NJ. Janet led a wondrously full and exemplary life of 96 years as family matriarch, scientist, artist, humanitarian, and supporter of women, biology, conservation, and the arts. She loved her many life-long friends and neighbors from Pearl River NY and area, and friends from UU Church in Pomona NY. She treasured her trips to Monhegan Island, and Costa Rica. She was a great friend of leatherback turtles and giant pandas and great supporter of The Leatherback Trust and Global Cause Foundation. Janet died at home with Hal and Sue Avery after a long and happy life. It was not from Covid but was from a combination of factors that accumulate with old age.

Some of her happiest memories were of being on the beach at Playa Grande with the turtles. She was always excited to see the leatherbacks and the young people who studied and protected them. She enjoyed talking to the research assistants at the Goldring-Gund Marine Biology Station. Ever the adventurer she accompanied us on hikes over the rough trail at Rincon de la Vieja where Janet trooped along with her walking stick over roots and rocks for the whole many hours of the trail. She was a real fighter! Janet made many donations to the Leatherback Trust and her generosity allowed us to acquire some of the first lots along the beach near the station. She is already missed.

You may send donations in her honor by clicking on the following link: DONATE
