 Overview by Month

October 2007

Despite much rain, the season is off to a good start. We had 7 turtles in September. In October, we have had 28 nesting females. This is 50% of the total turtles that we had in the whole season last year!! And this is just October! We counted 63 leatherback nests on the beach. We moved 12 nests to the hatchery and we are expecting the first ones to hatch at the end of November.

10/07 calendar

November 2007

November was really good. It stopped raining in the middle of the month, now our nights have so many starts! We had much more turtles than November from last season. We have 54 individuals total, from those 16 turtles are probably first time nesters! In Playa Grande there are 171 nests. The first nest of the season hatched on November 27, this was the only one, they are going to start hatching very soon. 

11/07 calendar

December 2007

December was really fun. We had a lot of turtles and the first nests starting hatching! So far we have 70 turtles (adult females) in total and 25 new turtles (that we marked on Playa Grande). 7 nests hatched in the hatchery producing 182 hatchlings, we are expecting more to come out during this week.

12/07 calendar

January 2008

leatherbackJanuary was a great month - we had a lot of turtles (we are up to 75 females). The nests in the hatchery hatched and we had just one left. We produced a total of 1062 hatchlings that crawled safe to the water. Also a lot of nests on the beach hatched too, producing a lot of hatchlings!!!!

Now the number of turtles is going down because we are approaching the end of the season but we are still getting a couple of turtles per night.

Usually the turtles nest at night, but the one shown at right lingered into the morning so we were able to get some photos.
